21st Century Schools

Write a description of what you think a 21st Century School should look like...

  1. A 21st Century Classroom is connecting the students with their interests and experiences with real world. Students will utilize Blooms’ Taxonomy to enhance their critical thinking. The skills that will be used to enhance the curriculum will include incorporating collaboration, critical thinking, presentations, writing, using technology, taking an active role in civic issues and internships and above all is conducting research. The BIGGEST challenge is to encourage, connect, and foster learning throughout a child’s day.

  2. The 21st century school will be a building without walls. It will be a global, technological learning environment in which the students will deal with real-life challenges and project based learning rather than textbooks. Teachers will be facilitators or co-learners of information. Teachers will serve as motivators to keep students interested in learning outside the school day and student projects will be global rather than focused on a particular geographic area. Students will use multimedia to complete projects and communicate with students around the world. The 21st century school will eliminate grade-specific classrooms. Students will progress according to their project based learning.

  3. A 21st Century School should prepare students to live and work in a competitive global society. In past centuries the emphasis of schools was on reading, writing, and math. While these core subjects are still important, the method of teaching students should be changed so that students develop thinking skills and remember important material instead of just memorizing certain facts. In a 21st Century School, students will perform, develop projects, learn and assess self and each other which are skills that are needed in a global work force. Programs will be research based and will provide students with a great deal of freedom as they collaborate with their classmates and other global classrooms. With the teacher becoming a facilitator instead of the source of all information, students will become motivated and more interested in the core subjects which ultimately will lead to less or no discipline issues.

  4. A 21st Century School should have a project based curriculum. Through this project based curriculum students will learn the following skills...
Collaboration: the ability to work in teams
    Critical Thinking
    Oral and Written Communication
Use of Technology to enhance and facilitate understanding
Citizenship: civic and global issues, service issues
    Career Education: Internships
Conduct Research: Use of the above skills to independently and collaboratively acquire additional knowledge in a particular content area

  5. When I think of 21st century schools, I think of how much time the students are spending on the computer. Students need to learn how to use the computer keyboard correctly. They need to learn how to type. Today’s theme is going green. The more the students are able to complete their work on the computer, the less paper they will be using. Every student will have a computer at their desk. When the teacher tells the class to work on a project they will work as a team to look up the information and present the final product to the class.
I see textbooks being a thing of the past. I see the students carrying around a PDA with their textbooks being in the PDA. They will just call up what book they need to be studying. I see students taking their test on the computer. The computer will grade the test and post the grade in a matter of seconds. The teacher will receive the incorrect answers at the end of the test. The teacher will then review the information and reteach the material the students missed.
I see a teacher teaching over the internet. She may be in a school in south Alabama with students watching her in all parts of the state. Some students may even take the course while they are at home.
Teachers in some cases will have to catch up with the students on what they know about technology.

  6. A 21st century school should include students who are not even in the building. It should have technological equipment that students know how to use, some that they are learning to use, and even some that they are “chomping at the bit” to even learn WHAT TO do with! (Yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition. Please forgive me Mrs. Sue Smith.)
“Lessons” in a 21st century school should be about problem solving, creating, and innovation. They should include personal and social responsibility and should integrate technology not only into the class, but into their lives.

  7. A 21st Century Classroom is full of technology, energetic, knowledge-hungry, problem-solving students. Students are no longer in quite lined rows of desks, but in cooperative learning pools, on the floor, moving from one group to the other doing collaborative learning. There is noise, but noise from a group of 21st century students learning in a new and different way.

  8. 21st Century Schools look like, what we would have called 25 years ago, “total chaos”. They will have students working collaboratively in small groups instead of the straight lines of desks with the teacher in the front of the room telling the students what they are to know. 21st century schools lead the students to learn through discovery instead of rote memory. Students will analyze web sites, blob responsibly, and manage money online instead of setting in class “learning” reading writing and arithmetic.
21st Century Schools will have teachers sharing “Best Practices” among themselves and other schools instead of closing the door behind them as they enter the room and no one ever knows what is taught and what kind of interaction they have with the students. Teachers work together in Professional Learning Communities. Professional development provides training that allows the teachers to be able to integrate and model 21st Century Skills.
